Potty Training A Toddler

August 2018 started a new journey in the Greene household. We started watching a 21 month old in our home every day while also raising our one year old. Two wild boys in our house has been the biggest blessing, and challenge, I’ve ever took on. When the boy we watched turned two, his mom introduced a potty to him and I quickly researched and purchased this little potty to sit next to ours for him to use while he was here. When our little boy took an interest after watching his older friend attempt to potty train, I purchased this potty seat that is the same awesome brand to put on top of the original toilet seat.

After 6 months of inconsistent potty trips for practice and no real strict schedule training, I decided I was really tired of cleaning really gross #2 diapers and decided to take a different approach.
If you have a toddler, you know as well as I do that you can tell when they are pooping... they run off to their own place (often the same place) where it is quiet, and do their thing. Since you can read these signs way easier than when they are peeing, I started using it to my own potty training advantage.

Before you do anything- play this potty video for your toddler to watch and learn from!! I give them a lot of the credit for the kids potty success. I grew up watching this video when I was little and it has stuck around all these years!

1) Catch Them in the Act- this requires keeping a pretty close eye on them, which I  assume you do anyway if you have a toddler in your house.

2) Go to Them and Have a Conversation- When I started doing this, I got resistance... No one wants to be bothered while they are pooping! But I go in anyway and explain that we are going to poop in the potty because it is shewie to go in our pants. Sometimes they go willingly and sometimes I pick them up and carry them to the potty. Just be diligent because you don’t want any accidents.

3) Get Them on the Potty and Give Them Something To Do- they may be crying as I get them there, but a book or small toy offers enough distraction to get their focus back to the mission at hand. Most of the time they go, and get rewarded with whatever candy you choose to use.. We go with gummies, chocolate chips, or mini marshmallows. I’ve heard of people using single nerds, but I feel like my boys our too spoiled by this point to be satisfied with something so small!

When they realize how much cleaner this process is, they catch on quickly and are more willing to go!!

Our next step will be the transition to underwear, but with a 27 and 19 month old I am happy with the results so far. Our littlest wears cloth diapers which I’m hoping will be most similar to cloth underwear and make him be more willing to pee in the potty, to avoid being wet.

I hope this will help some moms who are looking into potty training their kids! Happy pottying!!
